Sales tax
Find out how much tax to report for a period, split by each tax you charge.
Who can do this: Anyone who can open Reports (see The reports page).
Also called: GST, HST, VAT, sales tax return.
-
Open Reports, pick Sales tax, and set the Start and End to your filing period (for example Last quarter). The figures are “Total tax”, Taxable sales and Non-taxable sales.
On a computer: Left menu → Reports On a phone: More → Reports
-
In Show tax, pick how your tax is filed. Collected (money received) counts tax on the payments you received in the period. Invoiced (invoices sent) counts tax on the invoices made in the period, whether or not they’re paid yet. The list’s title changes to Tax collected or Tax charged to match.

-
Read the list. Each tax has its Rate, the tax amount, Taxable sales, Non-taxable sales, and the number of Payments or Invoices behind it. The Note column flags anything to check, and the line under the list says which time zone the days are counted in.

Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Only sent and paid invoices count. Deposit invoices and warranty records are left out. On the invoiced basis, an invoice cancelled after the period still counts in it, because it was live then. An invoice made in the period but still a draft isn’t counted; if you send it later, it’s added to that earlier period.
- On the collected basis, each payment carries its share of its invoice’s tax, and a refund takes its share back. An overpayment carries no extra tax.
- A combined tax (such as GST + PST) shows one row per part, and each row shows the same sales.
- Estimated split (from today’s tax settings) means the invoice was saved before Astragal kept the split, so the parts are worked out from your current tax settings. Split unavailable means the tax has since been deleted or changed, so it shows as one amount.
- “No tax charged” gathers the sales on invoices with no tax.
- On the collected basis, deposit money (paid on a quote or on a deposit invoice) shows as “Payments not yet on an invoice (tax not known yet)”, with the amount taken. Its tax is counted when the final invoice is paid.
- On the invoiced basis, “Tax on bad debt” shows the tax on invoices written off in the period. It’s not taken off the total. See Bad debt.
- Days are your company’s own days in its time zone, not UTC.
- Set up your tax rates in Taxes.
