The free trial

Every new company starts with a free trial of 14 days. It needs no card, and it never turns into a charge on its own.

Who can do this: Admins add a payment method. Everyone else sees the trial banner and is asked to talk to their administrator.

Also called: trial period.

On a computer: Left menu → Settings → Plan & billing On a phone: More → Settings → Plan & billing

A banner across the top of every screen counts down: “Free trial — 10 days left.” On the last day it says “Your free trial ends today.” Admins see an Add payment method link in it. The plan card on Plan & billing shows the status Free trial.

Everything works as it will on a paid plan, with two limits on messages to your clients:

  • Sending is capped at 50 texts and 200 emails to clients a month for as long as the trial runs.
  • The owner’s email address must be confirmed before any message goes out to clients. This one applies after the trial too.

The owner also gets emails 3 days and 1 day before the trial ends, and when it ends.

The plan card showing a Free trial status and the running monthly total

Pick your plan and any add-ons first. What this comes to shows the monthly figure for your team, and the confirmation reads “Nothing is charged during your free trial.” Then click Add payment method; you enter your card on the payment provider’s secure page, and we never see the card number. Back in Astragal, Activating your subscription… shows for a few seconds.

Adding a card early doesn’t start charging early: your first charge is the day the trial ends, and the banner then reads “Your card is first charged on” that date. On Starter it reads “Your plan starts on” that date. The exception is the last two days: a card added within 48 hours of the end starts the paid plan straight away.

If you see “Paying by card isn’t switched on yet. Contact support and we’ll get you set up.” instead of the button, email support@astragalhq.com; that’s on our side.

The banner turns red: “Your free trial has ended — your account is read-only until billing is set up.” Everything is still there and everyone can still sign in and look, but nothing can be created or changed. Adding a payment method puts everything back straight away.

14 days after the trial ended, a company that still has no card is paused, and signing in says “Your trial has ended. Contact support to reactivate your account.” Nothing is deleted; email support to turn it back on. See When your subscription is inactive.

If you signed up from the Starter button on the pricing page, your trial is on Starter. Nothing is charged for the trial, and payments you record during it never count towards a fee. During the trial, adding a fourth person or choosing Standard moves the trial to Standard straight away.
